About Pawculate

Pawculate is an independent, free website that publishes accurate, veterinary-sourced calculators for dog and cat owners. We were built around a simple frustration โ€” every other "pet calculator" we tried was buried under pop-ups, forced sign-ups, or used numbers no one could trace to a source. So we built the site we wanted to use.

Our Mission

To make reliable veterinary formulas accessible to every pet owner, in a fast, private, mobile-friendly format that works anywhere โ€” even offline once a page has loaded. We will never paywall a calculator, require an account, or sell user data.

Editorial Standards

Every calculator on Pawculate goes through a four-step content process before it goes live:

  1. Source selection. We only use formulas published in peer-reviewed veterinary journals, AAHA / AAFP / WSAVA guidelines, the Merck Veterinary Manual, Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook, or NRC nutrient publications.
  2. Independent verification. Each formula is implemented from primary sources and cross-checked against at least two secondary sources before publication.
  3. Worked examples. Every calculator page shows at least one full numeric example so you can verify the math by hand.
  4. Periodic review. All calculators are reviewed at least once a year and any time a major guideline (AAHA, AAFP, WSAVA, NRC, AAFCO) is updated. The review date is shown at the top of each calculator.

The Pawculate Editorial Team
Long-time pet owners ยท Software & data background
Pawculate is built and maintained by a small team of dog and cat owners with backgrounds in software engineering and data science. We are not licensed veterinarians, and we do not pretend to be. What we do is implement formulas published by veterinarians and veterinary organisations โ€” accurately, transparently, and with full source citations on every page. When we are uncertain about a formula, we cite the uncertainty rather than smoothing it over. Veterinary professionals are warmly invited to send corrections to [email protected].

What We Are Not

Pawculate is not a substitute for veterinary care. We do not diagnose, prescribe, or treat. Our calculators give you a numerically defensible starting point โ€” for example, an estimated daily calorie target or a typical Benadryl dose โ€” based on published formulas. Your actual pet may need something different because of factors only a vet can assess (kidney function, drug interactions, breed-specific risks, body condition, individual metabolism). When the calculator's answer matters medically, please confirm with your veterinarian.

Corrections Policy

If you spot an error โ€” whether a typo, a bug in a calculator, or a citation that has been superseded by newer guidance โ€” please email [email protected]. We treat corrections from veterinary professionals as a priority and aim to update or remove inaccurate content within five business days of confirming the issue. Material corrections are noted in the footer of the affected page.

How We Are Funded

Pawculate is currently self-funded by its operators. We may display advertising in the future to cover hosting and development costs. We will never accept payment to influence the content of a calculator, and any sponsored content will be clearly labelled as such.
