How Much Water Do Pets Need?

The veterinary guideline for water intake is approximately 50โ€“60 ml per kilogram of body weight per day for dogs, and 40โ€“60 ml/kg for cats. This daily minimum supports kidney function, digestion, temperature regulation, and nutrient transport.

These figures represent water from all sources combined โ€” drinking water plus moisture from food. A dog eating dry kibble (10% moisture) needs to drink most of this water directly. A cat eating wet food (70โ€“80% moisture) may drink noticeably less.

Tips to Encourage Your Pet to Drink More

Some pets โ€” especially cats โ€” are reluctant water drinkers. Strategies that help include using a pet water fountain (flowing water is more appealing to many cats), placing multiple water bowls in different locations, using wide shallow bowls (cats dislike whisker fatigue from deep narrow bowls), and adding a small amount of low-sodium broth to water.

When Increased Water Intake Is a Warning Sign

If your pet is drinking significantly more than normal (polydipsia) or urinating excessively (polyuria), this can indicate diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, Cushing's disease (in dogs), or hyperthyroidism (in cats). Increased thirst combined with weight loss, lethargy, or changes in appetite warrants a vet visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much water should a 50 lb dog drink per day?
A 50 lb (22.7 kg) dog needs approximately 1,250 ml (about 42 fl oz or 5.2 cups) of water per day. This increases with exercise, heat, or dry food diets.
Is it normal for my cat to barely drink water?
Cats on wet food diets often drink very little because they get most of their moisture from food. If your cat eats dry food and barely drinks, that's a concern โ€” try a water fountain or switch to wet food. Monitor urine output as an indicator of adequate hydration.
Can my pet drink too much water?
Yes, though rare. Excessive water drinking (polydipsia) in otherwise healthy pets can occasionally indicate anxiety or learned behavior, but it's more often a sign of an underlying health condition like diabetes or kidney disease. Consult your vet if intake seems dramatically above normal.
Does exercise increase my dog's water needs?
Significantly. Active dogs or those in hot weather can need 2โ€“3ร— their normal water intake. Always bring water on walks longer than 20 minutes and offer frequent small drinks rather than one large drink after exercise.
Should I leave water out all day for my pet?
Yes. Fresh, clean water should be available to your pet at all times. Change it daily and wash the bowl with soap and water regularly to prevent biofilm and bacterial buildup. Stainless steel and ceramic bowls are easier to keep clean than plastic.
